Believe It Or Not...

I was going through my dresser drawer and decided to wear this ring, that I haven't worn for awhile. The last time I wore the ring, it was a bit tight, but now it is a bit loose. Anyway, I noticed a silver coin in the little sack that the ring came in. And I remembered the story behind the coin.

A former co worker of mine mentioned about this old wives tale that she heard about. She said that if you put a silver coin, (we weren't sure if it was suppose a genuine silver) under your pillow the night before Valentines Day, you will be engaged within a year. Well, we both decided to do that, just for the heck of it. She went to the bank and got 2 silver half dollars.

So, the night before Valentines Day, I put the coin under my pillow and left it there for about a week. She put the coin too under her pillow, but then she took the coin out or it got misplaced. My sweetie, Bill, was a bit surprised that I actually did that. But here is the irony behind it. We were just in the relationship as being boyfriend and girlfriend. Around May, Bill asks me to move in with him and just last August, I did!

Hmmm..was it my devilish charm that won my sweetie's heart or was it that coin? Only time will tell....

Facts About Gaining Weight During Winter

Here's some things, to back up what I posted a couple of days ago, about feeling hungrier during the winter...

Human hibernation is a big myth: Our bodies do not hoard fat in the winter. In fact, when it's cold, our bodies at rest actually tend to burn more calories than usual in an effort to keep warm. However, there are plenty of other factors that come into play during the winter that could lead to weight gain.

Shorter days translate into more time cozying up inside and that means burning fewer calories. But just because you are in nesting mode doesn't mean you have to plop yourself on the couch and turn on the television. Instead, use your indoor time to do some active chores such as washing the dog, vacuuming, painting the walls and so on. You'll burn up to 300 calories an hour and feel productive at the same time.

Cold weather and long days can be a downer, and many of us take comfort in heartwarming foods such as creamy soups, mac and cheese, and hot chocolate not to mention all the sweet, fatty goodies that accompany the holidays. These rich foods can definitely lead to unwanted weight gain, so try warming up with leaner foods. Broth-based soups such as minestrone or good old chicken noodle are great picks. For a sweet treat, make hot chocolate with nonfat milk and top it off with fat-free marshmallows rather than whipped cream, or sip some spiced hot cider.
When winter arrives and there are more obstacles to getting out the door (think 40-degree weather and four feet of snow!), many people begin to exercise less. And of course, fewer workouts equal more pounds, even if your diet stays the same. Resist your urge to hunker down aim to get at least one hour of moderate physical activity a day.

Stormy Weather...

Well, the storm arrived yesterday evening and will be in the bay area during the weekend. I don't mind the rain but when it has strong gusty winds, that can be a problem. My umbrella kept blowing the other way and it was tough fighting the wind. Now that I moved to Mountain View, I have to deal with the leaves and blown branches on the sidewalk. This means I have to be real careful, where I walk. I ended up walking in a puddle, that was deep and shallow than I expected. My socks, shoes and my pants were soaking wet. Luckily, I didn't end up with a cold, cause I got out of the wet clothes immediately, when I got home.

Mother Nature was not to kind today. Cal Train was delayed cause of malfunction with the signals. Muni was flooded and service was delayed. Bart had to take a train out of service. Traffic on the streets and highway was slow and congested. Some time during the afternoon and later in the day, the weather was dry. But now it is raining again.

It will be a windy and wet weekend....

Is It Just Me? Or Could It Be The Weather?

Now that the fall season and winter is closely approaching. Don't forget the holidays. Everyones appetites go overdrive. In 3 weeks, Thanksgiving will be here. Recipes of turkeys, delicious desserts, gravy, mashed potato and all the good trimmings are exchanged. Magazines with pictures of these delights are advertised.

Since the weather is starting to get a bit chilly, you see people drinking hot beverages and the sweet aroma of hot chocolate, tea or coffee. Smell of freshly baked pastries.

Just now I am thinking of holiday cookies. Sugar cookies with sprinkles and Christmas colors. Candy canes, ginger bread cookie houses and popcorn in tin cans.

Alas, I am on a strict diet and can not have such delicious treats. But I can find substitutes that will accommodate my sweet cravings!
