The awards, went smoothly. It ran exactly 3 and half hours. There were a few news brief updates of the war, during the broadcast. Most of the women, wore they beautiful gowns. Black was the popular color, but there were some pastel, gold and green. Most of the gowns were simple, long and hip hugging. None of the outrageous fashions, that we have seen in the past. Everyone looked all nice and tan. Some of the women looked a bit pasty. Jennifer Lopez aka J Lo looked pretty decent in her lime color gown. There wasn't the traditional red carpet.
Steve Martin, did a very good job, hosting the festivities. He told a few jokes and kept the audience amused. As predicted, there were some surprises!
Here are some highlights: For best actor, the nominees were..Jack Nicholson, Michael Caine, Adrien Brody and Nicholas Cage. Moneymakers betted on Nicholson or Caine to win. I was expected either one of them also. But to everyone's surprise, the winner was Adrien Brody. No one can forget, the look on his face and his reaction. He was so shocked, stunned, surprised and excited, that he even ran up to Halle Berry and planted a big kiss, when he went to receive his Oscar. It's nice to see a new up and coming actor. He won the award for his performance in, "The Pianist." His acceptance speech, was very moving and he seemed so modest. There was a certain quality about him, maybe it was because he didn't think he would win, among the company of 3 other actors, who have already won an Oscar or two under their belt. I haven't seen the film, but I've heard great reviews about it, from friends. Roman Polanski, another big surprise winner, won for best director for the same movie.
Who would have thought that for original song, Eminem would win and he did! Of course, he told the media that he wasn't going to attend the awards.
Catherine Zeta-Jones won for "Chicago." That was sort of expected. Nicole Kidman won for "The Hours." I was told, that Meryl Streep (she was nominated and co-starred with Kidman) or Julianne Moore (she co-starred also in the same movie, as Kidman, but was nominated for another movie), should have gotten the Oscar. Kidman's character was shown briefly. Streep and Moore were shown more and the movie evolved around their characters.
Movies that I want to see, now that the winners have been announced? They are; "The Pianist", "Talk to Her", "Chicago" (maybe?), Y Tu Mama Tambien (this movie was not a winner, but I saw the trailer on this and wanted to see it) and "Adaptation."
Well, it's that time of the year. Cameras, fashion, who was with whom, who said or did what??
Predicted big winners? "Chicago" and "The Hours." The only movie that I saw, that is nominated in some categories, is "The Two Towers." Not sure, if a musical will get that many awards. There are other movies, besides the two that I mentioned, that may win a lot of awards.
So, who knows. There could be some big winners, maybe some surprise ones. But once, the names are called and the Oscars are handed out. People will flock to the theaters to see the movie that won big honors.
